Five reasons Peloton isn’t just for lockdown

A review of Peloton App Membership…

I first subscribed to the Peloton App in Autumn/Winter 2020 when the UK went into its second Covid-19 lockdown. I resisted jumping fully onto the ‘Peloton bandwagon’ in favour of the Peloton App Membership — a lower cost and lower commitment version with all the same great content. Instead of paying over £1,700 for a Peloton bike plus £39.99 per month membership for something that I thought might become obsolete when gyms re-opened, I opted for the ‘Peloton hack’ and bought a cheaper, but still high quality, Sole 900 bike for £1,300 and subscribed to the Peloton App Membership for £12.99 per month. And whilst for the majority of time I won’t be staying at home when it comes to working out, I’m still loving the Peloton App today, if not more than during lockdown. Here’s five reasons why:

  1. Great value for money. I live in London which is a Mecca for boutique spin studios including Psycle, 1Rebel and Boomcycle all charging upwards of £17 per class. For a fraction of the price, I get unlimited access to thousands of super high quality, live stream and on demand classes via my mobile or tablet from anywhere. Membership is on a rolling monthly basis meaning you aren’t locked in to a long contract so, if you get fittapp FOMO (fear of missing out) and want to switch to Technogym App for a bit (guilty) or decide you want to go back to your old faithful studio and take advantage of their at home offering, you can do that too.
  2. Convenience of hybrid working-out. A self-confessed gym-junkie, even during the darkest months of lockdown I had faith that sooner or later I’d be heading back to my sacred space…the Gym. For me, nothing beats the Red Room at Barry’s Bootcamp’s which is impossible to re-create at home. But, for the days where I’m pushed for time or am working from home and need a mid-day pick me up, Peloton App is everything. Much like hybrid office working, I’m embracing the hybrid work out. And it isn’t just cycle classes, if I’m not feeling a sweaty spin session, I can take a strength class or barre class instead. Tip: if you are a yogi and looking for at home asana, pranayama, guided meditations etc, I’d recommend a yoga first app such as Alo Moves over Peloton.
  3. Great travel companion. I’m one of those people who uses the fitness centre filter whist searching for hotels. Staying active whilst away is really important for my mental health so being able to access classes from anywhere in the world is a huge plus. But lets face it, many of the best travel destinations aren’t known for their boujee gym scene and hitting the streets for a run may not be an option so Peloton App can be a great travel companion. With a plethora of equipment free and resistant band workouts — no gym, no problem.
  4. Marathon training programme. There is nothing quite like an accountability partner than one that knows every training run you’ve done. On my second attempt at training for the London Marathon I decided to try out the Peloton Outdoor Marathon Training Program. This takes all the thinking out of your programming as you have every day for 18-weeks mapped out for you on your phone. I’ve found it particularly effective in ensuring I incorporate a proper warm up before every run as well as pushing me to increase the intensity of my shorter runs which are all guided by a highly experienced marathon runners including Becks Gentry and Matt Wilpers. Unfortunately, a recurring stress-fracture pressed paused on my progress after week six but I was loving it up until then and will be picking it up again as soon as I can.
  5. Learning Spanish? A bit left field I know, but I recently started taking beginner Spanish classes and have been trying to find ways to incorporate learning into every day life. What better way than during one of my favourite past times right? I’m loving Camilia Ramón’s rides taught in Spanish where I add the Spanish subtitles to help me learn-as-I -burn!

So, whilst its current share price may be telling a different story, for me, Peloton is more than just a lockdown fad. I’d love to know what others think…as always comments encouraged.
